On January 29, 2020, it was announced that the winner of the History Channel television contest, “An idea to change history,” was the Peruvian agroindustrial engineer Julio Garay Barrios, a native of the Peruvian region of Ayacucho. The idea that earned him recognition are the Nutri H cookies:
(…) An enriched cookie that is pleasant to the palate of children, easy transport, conservation and direct consumption. Its components rich in protein and iron serve to combat anemia and childhood malnutrition.
Their cookies increased the hemoglobin level in children aged three to six years who consumed a 30 gram packet every day for 30 days, according to the pilot tests carried out in Peru.
Nutri H cookies are distributed in authorized locations throughout Peru. They are also part of the plans against childhood anemia in various municipalities and regional governments.
Almost 50% of Peruvian girls and boys suffer from anemia
Paradoxically, in a country that is gaining popularity as a gastronomic tourist destination, about 50% of children suffer from anemia, a condition that often arises from the deficiency of iron and vitamins in the food. Anemia was reduced from 46.1% in girls and boys from 6 to 35 months of age to 41.1%, especially given to preventive activities, according to 2019 data from the National Institute of Statistics and Informatics of Peru.
According to Julio Garay himself, his Nutri H cookies contain three basic ingredients in Peru: quinoa, cocoa and bovine hemoglobin, which provides the most iron. He himself had anemia as a child, and that motivated him to find a solution.
Anemia has serious consequences for the child, you carry low academic performance, since children with anemia are usually tired and do not have the same level of attention as other children, so they have poor school performance. They are also at greater risk of contracting infectious diseases because they have low defenses, have less psychomotor development, and attention and concentration deficiency.
On Twitter, the Nutri H cookie account celebrated the triumph of its product:
